Actin regulates cell morphology, membrane dynamics, intracellular transport, and more. However, it is involved in many processes primarily regulated by other cytoskeletal systems, such as the assembly of the microtubule-based organelle, the cilium. We used algal cells in which divergent actin genes are co-expressed to discover both novel mechanisms of actin-cilium crosstalk and fundamentals of actin regulation.
